Spain defender Aymeric Laporte has admitted he could not wait for Didier Deschamps to call up to the senior France squad before deciding to join Spain.

The former Manchester City centre-back was a key part of Luis de la Fuente’s side. That won Euro 2024 this summer.

The 30-year-old has reflected on the rocky relationship between him and Deschamps. Which led to his decision to leave France’s youth system to join the Spain first-team.

“I couldn’t wait any longer,” Laporte said.

“Years go by and in the end the coach does the same thing.

“If I want to play for international tournaments I have to make a decision. I did well with the national team, we had many exchanges of ideas (with Deschamps), the relationship was not good.

“It’s over, I don’t think about it anymore. Everyone has their own path.”
