Spain defender Aymeric Laporte has admitted he could not wait for Didier Deschamps to call up to the senior France squad before deciding to join Spain.

The former Manchester City centre-back was a key part of Luis de la Fuente’s side. That won Euro 2024 this summer.

The 30-year-old has reflected on the rocky relationship between him and Deschamps. Which led to his decision to leave France’s youth system to join the Spain first-team.

“I couldn’t wait any longer,” Laporte said.

“Years go by and in the end the coach does the same thing.

“If I want to play for international tournaments I have to make a decision. I did well with the national team, we had many exchanges of ideas (with Deschamps), the relationship was not good.

“It’s over, I don’t think about it anymore. Everyone has their own path.”

Laporte was born in Agong, in southwestern France. ufabet http://ufabet999.app And he has Basque ancestry.

Laporte’s chances with the national team have not been hampered by his decision to move to the Saudi Pro League in 2023. A far cry from his treatment with Les Blues. Where he failed to make a senior appearance despite excelling for Athletic Bilbao.

In 2021, Deschamps still refused to call him up to the team. In May, the Spanish government confirmed that he had received Spanish citizenship. While FIFA later approved the player’s change of nationality.
